Caren Martinez-Gamez
South High School Class of 2008
Metro State College of Denver
 |
When Caren moved to Denver from California during her high school years, she enrolled in South High School and dove into her favorite activity – vocal music. She has been involved in vocal music since she was just three years old, and she currently sings in her church choir and other performing groups. Caren knew she wanted to go to college, but like many first generation college students, she didn’t know where to start with the complicated process of applying for schools and financial aid. Her Future Center advisor helped her get into Metro State College of Denver and secure the DSF scholarship and others. But she did even more for Caren. She inspired Caren to pursue a career as an advocate for higher education for minority students. Today, Caren is making DSF and her community proud by achieving a 3.7 grade point average during her first year of college, and some day, Caren plans to give back to this community by inspiring the next generation of DPS students to succeed in college. |
Joey Scarlett
Thomas Jefferson High School Class of 2009
Johnson & Wales University
| As a sophomore in high school, Joey was not on a good trajectory. His grades were falling and hope for a successful future was dim. Thanks to some intervention by his teachers and his single mother, he turned a corner in his junior year and began dreaming of a bright future. He saw himself going into culinary arts and someday owning his own fine dining restaurant. His Future Center advisor showed him the many opportunities to pursue an education in culinary arts here in Denver, and she helped him choose the one that is right for him. Today, Joey is pursuing a four-year degree in restaurant and food management at Johnson & Wales University. Someday, Joey wants you to share his dream by dining at his very own restaurant here in Denver. | |
Remberto Rivera
North High School class of 2008
University of Colorado Denver
 | A great student at North High School, Remberto was too busy for most of his senior year to prepare for college. He was on the football team while holding down not just one, but two jobs. His mom was working hard as a housekeeper and his dad was in construction, so college was unfamiliar territory. But our DSF advisor at North High School opened his eyes to the opportunities a college degree would bring to both him and his family, guiding him through the complex college admissions and financial aid process. Remberto began his second year at the University of Colorado Denver this fall and was just accepted to the Business School. |
Jackelyn Nguyen
Lincoln High School Class of 2008
University of Denver
| Jackelyn was raised by parents who always pushed her to go to college and build her future, but she knew that finding money for college would be an issue. She learned about her options for college and the many scholarships available to her at her high school’s Future Center. Her advisor helped her with essays for college and scholarship applications, and he encouraged her whenever she began to doubt herself. Jackelyn is attending the University of Denver this fall as transfer student after starting her first year at UCD. She plans to major in journalism and looks forward to a world of opportunities in news or public relations. | |
